RIP Websites

Oli Smith

Oli Smith | Founder

The website is gone.

Died quietly, somewhere between the third stock photo of a handshake and the words “we’re passionate about”.

Okay – you still have one. So do we. The address isn’t going anywhere.

What’s died is the idea. The website as an online brochure. A place to put some information, tick the box and move on.

Built to exist, not to sell.

Most websites start with the same brief: “We need a new website.”

So that’s what the business gets. A new website.

It’s a tick-box exercise for most businesses.

Nobody stopped to ask what it was for.

When a website is a project to finish, not a tool to win customers, the symptoms are easy to spot.

It doesn’t bottle the spirit of your business

Walk into a good business and you feel it. The energy. The people. The way they talk about what they do.

Then you visit their website and it’s gone. Flat. One dimensional.

The best thing about the business – its spirit – never made it onto the screen.

This takes hard conversations to unpick, and a knack for bringing the intangible vibe of a business to life.

It talks about you, not to another human

“Established in 1987.” “Our services.” “Our values.”

Company first, corporate throughout.

But people buy from people. It’s P2P – people to people

Your customer wants to know you understand their problem – in the words they’d use themselves, not the words your board would sign off.

It looks like everyone else’s

Try this. Cover up the logo on your homepage. Could it belong to a competitor?

For most businesses, the honest answer is yes. Same layout. Same photos. Same claims. Same images. Same tone of voice. Similar font. A different shade of a colour.

And AI websites 100x this. Design differentiates.

We call it blanding. And it costs you, because nobody remembers the same thing twice. The brand that gets remembered is the brand that gets bought.

It’s selling before you are

Here’s the commercial bit.

By the time a buyer picks up the phone, they’ve done their homework. They’ve looked you up, weighed you against two or three others and formed a view. But is it the right view?

Linkedin coins this the 95/5 rule. Only 5% are in the market right now, the rest are not quite ready, or just doing their homework, until they are ready to buy.

Your website is the invisible influencer. It builds trust and positions your business before you’ve even met.

Or it does the opposite. Quietly.

And you never find out, because nobody rings to say “we didn’t shortlist you – your website felt like everyone else’s.”

From website to experience

So what replaces the brochure? An experience.

Something that feels like meeting you. Captures your business. And tells the truth, in a compelling way.

From information to engagement

From company focused to customer focused

From corporate to human

From box layouts to dynamic design

From personality-less to distinctive

From tickbox exercise to sales tool

Time and time again, we’ve created digital experiences that have transformed our clients fortunes. Because they’re not just websites, their interfaces to decisions. Building trust, quietly influencing and resonating with real people.

Ask a better question

Stop asking “do we need a new website?”

Start asking “what should it feel like to meet us?” – that’s what an experience does – it makes you feel, and drives action.

Is your website selling for you – or just sitting there?

If you can’t tell, get in touch. You can’t read the label from inside the jar.
